Choosing a Perfect Wallpaper

Wallpapering became increasingly common to the everyday homeowner once the road was less taken. But if you’re new to the wallpaper world, you probably wonder: What’s the best way to maneuver your individuality through the seemingly endless selections to best express it? And once you’ve got the perfect rolls in hand, where should you go?
“Once you have committed wallpaper, you need to answer some style questions,” says Dexterio experts. They offer the tips below.
Wallpaper to Match Room Style
First, consider the style of the room that you’re decorating:
  • If it’s romantic, try delicate damasks and florals with fine lines in muted, pastel colors.
  • If it’s casual, faux finishes such as beadboard and stucco are simple, casual options. Pairing beadboard wallpaper with organic, flowing floral designs also makes for an at-home, relaxed feel.
  • If it’s contemporary/fashion-forward, consider bold geometrics with high gloss and metallic accents. Large-scale and bold florals also make a high-fashion statement this year.
  • If it’s traditional, check out intricate damasks and stripes, which coordinate perfectly with traditional furnishings and decor.
How You Will Use Wallpaper in the Room
Find out how to use the room wallpaper. Not all designs work in precisely the same way. Here are the different options:
  •  All four walls shielded. Hanging horizontally on all four walls a modern, plain stripe style offers a fresh contemporary feel. Big and simplistic designs aren’t going to clutter a space but add a trendy twist.
  • Only one wall. To highlight an area of a room, such as behind a sofa or bed, choose a dramatic, bold pattern. Designs with a touch of metallic, mica, or gloss will offer a sexy, sophisticated look.
  • Wallpaper with railing for the chair. If you work with a chair rail that separates a wall, it’s easy to give it a unique value. Try painful beadboard wallpaper on under the chair rail for a classic feel. Hang up a wide-scale floral or damask over the chair rail for an enhanced feel. Another fun way to work with a chair rail is to anchor the wall with a pattern underneath it, like dramatic damask wallpaper, and paint a matching color above it. In this fashion adding wallpaper produces a special element of surprise not often seen in rooms.
  • Include a ceiling value. Get the feel of tin ceilings, with the uncomfortable squares of Graham & Gray. You can quickly attain a Victorian-style tin ceiling feel, finished in a classic metallic hue.
Backing Paper Choices
Once the color and design of the pattern you want are decided, it’s the best time to look for the wallpaper. When you want to shift, wallpaper with a non-woven backrest can easily remove. Since it does not need to soak, the paste can be applied directly to the wall which, compared to standard wallpapers, cuts decorating time in half.
Prevent Small Patterns
When you are applying wallpaper for the first time, avoid very small patterns with similar offsets. The prototypes can be hard to fit for in repeat for these.
Flat vs. Textured patterns
All about personal style is choosing a flat or textured design. Textured patterns generally give a room a more casual look, whereas flat designs can make a wall more refined.
Textured wallpapers can add some dimension to a wall, as well as do an excellent job of covering imperfections. Some textured wallpapers are painful to a monochromatic appearance. Generally, the actual patterns of the textured wallpapers are less detailed than a flat pattern.
You have the options of fine detailing in design with flat wallpapers, and embellishments like metallic, gloss, or mica effect. If you have imperfections in your walls but prefer a flat wallpaper look, using a wall liner as a base layer can provide you with the additional coverage that you need.
Determining how much wallpaper to buy
Follow these instructions:
  • Measure all walls, and multiply the width in feet by the height of each wall.
  • Add all dimensions to yield total square footage.
  • For windows, doors, and other large openings, deduct.
  • Check the roll label for how much square foot coverage the roll provides, and make sure the rolling coverage is more than the total square footage of the wall.
  • The general rule of thumb is to order one extra roll as much as you need. It is best to obtain it at the same time as the original purchase to ensure that the rolls are run from the same product so there is no color variation. By looking at the batch number a consumer can ensure this. If the number of batches is the same then there will be no color variation.
Double roll and single roll are terms of the industry; it is easier for the customer to determine how much wallpaper is required by looking at the square-foot coverage provided by the roll.
